Structured Stories NYC is a project of the Duke Reporters’ Lab and Structured Stories to experiment with a new structured journalism approach for local government coverage. Funding for the project was provided by the Online News Association Challenge Fund as well as the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy at Duke University.
In June and July of 2015, three Duke students covered a variety of news events in New York using the Structured Stories platform developed by former Yahoo product manager David Caswell. The goal was to test the platform in real-life conditions and see if the structured approach could be used for news events.
The students – Ishan Thakore, Natalie Ritchie and Rachel Chason – chose a range of stories to follow that included the regulation of Uber, public housing and the relations between the New York police and Mayor Bill de Blasio.
This demo site is a preliminary display of the content. We plan additional refinements of the site and a user testing program in the near future.
